Houston-wide Wi-Fi would benefit our city workers
April 9th, 2007I recently wrote a bit on Earthlink getting contracted by our city to build and implement city-wide Wi-Fi Internet access. Well, it’s still moving forward and there are some additional advantages that are being realized, along with ease of use for citizens.
For example, an officer patrolling his beat can bring up an image of an APB car theif instantly and help keep our city safer. Someone administering first aid on scene or in an ambulance could call up current medication documents to help quicker, more informed decisions for the injured. Starting to see the power of this? I am!
Mayor Bill White is doing a lot to help get this contract approved by the City Council, and I appreciate that. To deny this 2.5 million dollar deal would set us back personally as a city, and in comparison to where other major metropolises are heading in terms of technology. Building this network would take approximately two years, so we um, kinda.. need to get started NOW.
Oh and get this, no tax dollars will be used to fund this project. Hmm, good or bad?
