Earthlink wireless Internet for all of Houston?
February 13th, 2007
File this one under “oh how very sweet it would be!” Our city announced today that it had struck up a dealio with Earthlink to create an entire city-wide Wi-Fi network. This would easily rank in as the largest in the U.S. at approximately 600 square miles worth of sweet connectivity.
Now I know we’re all think “free, free, free”, but don’t get too excited just yet. Pricing and financial settings have yet to be discussed in full, and much is left to sort out in those regards. But we can hope right? Do your part by contact the local government, as well as Earthlink and relaying your desires for wireless ‘net that reaches across H-town still leaving your billfold intact.
Currently, there are over 250 city-size areas through the country that currently have or plan to have public wireless ‘net.
Earthlink was chosen out of 4 other competing Internet service providers (ISPs), and I’m sure their experience with public Wi-Fi helped them in that respect. The Atlanta-based company has plans in the mix for other cities such as Alexandria, Va; Anaheim, CA; San Francisco and more.
