Smokers, enjoy it while lasts? By it, I’m referring to the right to smoke in public places, in certain area of Texas. Senator Rodney Ellis is attempting to gain some momentum with a n initiative that would ban smoking in all workplaces, public restaurants and bars. This would be a huge change for our state, being that such laws that are found in eastern and western urban areas do not often find their way in our Texan culture.
Let me get right down to my opinion here and say that I find the restaurant ban fair and beneficial to everyone, including smokers. Banning smoking in bars though? Why don’t you just tell the watering hole owners to close their doors for cryin’ out loud; it’d have the same effect. Seriously, when I’m in a bar, I notice anywhere from 75 to 90% of people smoking. If I didn’t want to be in that environment, I’d take my rear home and enjoy a beer there. The fact is, people know that a bar atmosphere is smoky, loud, and probably not the healthiest for you. A couple hours once a month for me isn’t going to make an impact on my health, and for those who are already smokers, they’ve made that choice to suffer consequences.
In conclusion, I can’t say I fully agree with what Sen. Ellis is up to, but I must commend his efforts. Sorta, kinda, maybe. Read more: Houston senator now seeking to leash smokers statewide
