Banh Mi and Cafe Sua Da @ Cali Sandwich (Read: Heaven On Earth)
September 29th, 2006Great food and great company - always a recipe for success…
A few of my co-workers and I headed over to Cali Sandwich in midtown Houston this afternoon for some genuine Vietnamese cuisine. This was not my first trip to the shop, and it certainly won’t be my last. It’s rather convenient for me to pop over during my lunch hour due to it being just a few blocks away from my office, but even you hail from the north or south side, make it a point to set aside a couple hours out of your much anticipated weekend and pay a visit to this midtown eatery.
Cali’s a busy place, and if you know restaurants (like most Houstonians do), you’ll take this as a very good sign. Located in the heart of the midtown’s Viet center, Cali Sandwich isn’t the most luxurious or attractive spot in this fab city, but put that far, far behind you and focus on the authentic cuisine they’re serving up on the daily.

Today I ordered the bbq pork Banh Mi (pronounced bun mee) sandwich and a cafe sua da (iced coffee w/ condensed milk, pronounced kuh-fay se dah), and not more than a New York (or should I say… Cali?) minute later, both the food and drink have been placed in front of me for the devouring that would soon follow. I’ll be honest, if that doesn’t excite your senses, something could be seriously, seriously wrong with you. Keep in mind that this all totaled under 5 dollars.
My co-workers enjoyed some rice plates and iced tea (although I strongly recommended they give the iced coffee a go, heh). Their thoughts were right on track with mine - Cali Sandwich is a WIN. With quick, on-point service, wonderful food that excites the senses, and an atmosphere that’s urban-as-can-be, I’m willing to bet you’ll be as enamored with this down-to-earth spot as I am.

Warning: cafe sua da’s no joke, prepare to be wide awake if you give it a go.
